Nowhere in kitchen design are there so any myths and half-truths as RTA cabinets (Ready to Assemble) so lets debunk them once and for all.
- RTA cabinets are cheap and poorly made.
This began as a true statement many years ago. But as technology and building practices improved the RTA cabinet became no different than any other cabinet in quality. Some are still cheaply made, but some assembled cabinets are as well. High quality RTA cabinets are built the same way as those you would buy assembled. The only difference is the doors, drawer fronts, drawer boxes, sides, front, and back are shipped unassembled. Today RTA cabinets are made from the same species and grade of wood as the pre-assembled cabinets and the same craftsmanship. In fact, for the price you get a far superior cabinet.
- RTA cabinets are a nightmare to assemble.
When you buy from a good reputable cabinet company RTA cabinets are not difficult to assemble. They come with complete easy-to-follow directions and all you need are a few common tools. In all likelihood they are far easier than the unassembled furniture you’ve purchased. At most you may need a friend to help you hang the wall cabinets.
- RTA cabinets cost too much.
Ready built cabinets can get frightfully expensive. But because you assemble RTA yourself, they cost a great deal less. RTA cabinets can cost as much as 50% less than custom cabinets including shipping costs. In fact, shipping costs for ready built cabinets is usually a lot higher than RTA.
- RTA cabinets won’t increase the value of my home.
Once RTA cabinets are assembled and in place, they will give your home the same increase in value. No one will ever know they arrived at your door unassembled and they cost less than custom cabinets. They will not only increase the value of your home but will also help it sell faster.
- If my kitchen is an odd shape, I’ll need custom cabinetry to fit.
A good kitchen designer can design a layout using RTA cabinetry that will work for your kitchen shape. Having the assistance of a good designer for a kitchen remodel is essential to a kitchen that’s code compliant and a joy to work in. Good design doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg, but redoing parts of your kitchen to bring it up to code can. A good RTA dealer can provide the design you need, will answer all your questions, and show you how to get more form and function while still keep within your budget.
Today’s quality RTA cabinets are well built, made from the finest wood, with carefully crafted doors; they’re easy to assemble, cost less than custom or semi-custom pre-assembled cabinets and shipping is less as well. RTA cabinets are available in the most popular colors and finishes and they add value to your home.
RTA is a smart option even if you’re not a dedicated do-it-yourselfer. (And I’ll never tell they’re RTA if you don’t).
